Oriana Pepper, der var fra Bury St Edmunds, var i Belgien sidste år, hvor hun blev stukket lige over sit højre øje af en myg.

En efterfølgende undersøgelse af hendes tragiske dødsfald har vist, at hun blev bragt til et hospital den 7. juli, fordi hendes øje begyndte at hæve.
På hospitalet fik hun antibiotika, men et par dage senere endte 21-årige Oriana med at kollapse. Her blev hun igen kørt på hospitalet.
Desværre afgik hun ved døden blot tre dage senere. Oriana gik nemlig bort den 12. juli.
En obduktion viste senere, at den unge pilot var død som følge af en septisk emboli, der havde spredt sig til hendes hjerne.
I forbindelse med en afhøring udtalte retsmediciner Nigel Parsley, at den unge pilots død var forårsaget af en ‘alvorlig infektion forårsaget af et insektbid i panden’.
“En infektion er kommet ind i Orianas hud efter et bid fra et insekt,” lød det fra ham.
“Den er så kommet ind i halspulsåren og har ført til septisk emboli i hendes hjerne. Jeg har aldrig set et tilfælde som dette før.”
“Det er bare en sådan ting, der er en uheldig tragedie for en ung dame, der tydeligvis havde en vidunderlig karriere og et liv foran sig.”
I en officiel udtalelse har Orianas far sagt, at hendes datter var en passioneret pilit og ‘ikke elskede noget mere end at flyve med sin far og sin bror Oliver, der også er pilot under uddannelse’.
“Hun havde mødt en, hun elskede, hun var ved at uddanne sig til kommerciel pilot og opfyldte sine drømme,” sagde han.
Orianas kæreste James sagde, at de begge havde fået ‘flere’ stik efter ankomsten til Antwerpen den 20. maj, men at de ikke havde ‘haft nogen reaktion’, efter at have fået at vide, at det var ‘normalt for området og årstiden’.
Efter at have været hospitalet, havde lægerne ifølge James forklaret dem, at infektionen i hendes øje højst sandsynligt skyldtes et myggestik.
Men den 9. juli kollapsede Oriana og måtte indlægges og døde senere. Hendes mor Louisa sagde, at familien har oprettet et ‘lille stipendium’ i hendes navn med British Women Pilots’ Association ‘for at opmuntre andre kvindelige piloter’.
